I feel like this expedition helped not only nurture my love for science and the natural environment, but also pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me grow as a person. I learned much from my expedition in Honduras, not only about nature and science, but also about how people in another part of the world live. The local people were very welcoming and generous, whether it was the guides leading us down the trails naming plants and animals along the way,  the cooks giving us seconds, or Dona Martina patiently teaching us how she makes her coffee.

The science learning opportunities for this expedition were excellent. I not only got to learn so many new things about the animals of Central America during evening lectures, but I also learned so much more by collecting real data. The herpetology survey was my favorite because I got to collect important data on a critically endangered species of frog that has been devastated by chytrid fungus.  I feel like I got some of my most meaningful learning just by talking to the scientists about their lives and research during free social times at dinner and in the evenings.

The trip to Honduras defied all expectations I had for it, not only because of the combination of cultural connections, amazing science, and brand new experiences. Opwall made sure that the trip felt incredibly safe, yet still like an adventure. This trip really gave me new inspiration as I plan my future. I always knew that I wanted to become a scientist, but I was not sure that becoming a field scientist was right for me. Because of this expedition, I now know that I do in fact want to become a field scientist when I am older. Whether you like science, or just want an adventure with new experiences, Honduras could be right for you; this expedition will expand your horizons in ways you never thought imaginable.
