As our boat sped across the surf break waters of Sodwana Bay, the salty spray from the ocean splashing me and the excitement of what we may see today being the buzz on board. My Opwall friends chatting excitedly, their main point of talk being the whales we saw from the shore and the pod of dolphins not far from us as the wind whipped past our boat.
As we slowed to a stop at our dive site, our dive master did their final dive checks before the divers dropped off the boat in a synchronized splash. Surfacing again before going deep below the waves out of sight, to explore an underwater world in a way some may only dream.

Slipping into the warm Indian Ocean, I adjusted my mask and snorkel, then dipped my face below the surface. A whole new world revealed itself – schools of vibrant fish darted among colourful coral formations, while sea turtles glided by with unhurried grace. From here, I observed the intricate dance of marine life, feeling a profound connection to this underwater paradise that I was seeing.
Above the divers I observed all that was around me, playing with their bubbles as I duck dived down deeper, gliding through the water with no effort. As I looked at my surroundings, a massive manta ray encircled us, showing off its elegance through the vast ocean. Its movements were hypnotic as it soared through the water with effortless power. I held my breath, not wanting to disturb its beautiful dance, as it circled around us. As it glided away, I realized I’d just witnessed one of the ocean’s most awe-inspiring sights without having to free dive deeper than a few meters.

Throughout the day, I alternated between snorkelling and resting on the sandy beach, chatting with my newfound friends about our experiences and what we would tell everyone at home. We shared our amazement at the day’s discoveries and swapped stories of our conservation work and where we would see ourselves in the future. The camaraderie among our small group was infectious, and I felt a deep sense of belonging.
As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow across the bay, I reflected on the incredible experiences of the day. The thrill of the boat ride, the wonder of swimming alongside marine life I’ve never seen before, the breathtaking encounter with the manta ray – all of it combined to create memories I knew would last a lifetime.

Sodwana Bay had revealed its treasures to us, and I felt immensely grateful for this opportunity with Opwall to explore and appreciate the rich marine life of South Africa’s coast. As we headed back to the camp, I was already looking forward to what new adventures tomorrow might bring in this underwater paradise that we had barely scratched the surface of.
